How to Set Up Artwork for DTF Printing

Setting up your artwork correctly is one of the most important steps in getting high-quality DTF transfers. Clean, properly sized files help produce sharper details, brighter colors, and smoother edges when your designs are printed.

For the best DTF printing results, artwork should be created at 300 DPI or higher at the final print size. Vector artwork is preferred because it can be enlarged or reduced without becoming blurry or pixelated. Common vector file formats include AI, EPS, SVG, and PDF.

Whenever possible, submit your design with a transparent background. Avoid screenshots, low-resolution images, or artwork downloaded from social media, as these files may not print clearly.

Setting Up a DTF Gang Sheet

DTF gang sheets should be set up at 22.5 inches wide by however long you need. Place multiple designs on the sheet to make the best use of the available space.

Leave a small amount of room between each design so the transfers can be cut apart easily. Make sure all artwork stays within the 22.5-inch width and is sized exactly how you want it to print.

Properly prepared DTF artwork helps reduce delays and ensures your custom transfers arrive ready to cut, press, and apply.

 

 

 

How to Use AI to Create Artwork for Printing

AI image generators can be a great way to create original artwork for DTF transfers, T-shirts, stickers, signs, and promotional products. However, the quality of the finished print depends heavily on how the artwork is generated and prepared.

AI-generated images often include soft edges, tiny details, unwanted backgrounds, distorted text, or visual effects that do not reproduce well in print. A clear, detailed prompt can help produce cleaner artwork that requires less editing before printing.  Less is more in the printing processes so keep things simple for a nice clean look. 

What to Include in Your AI Prompt

For the best print results, tell the AI that the artwork should have:

  • A clean, transparent or solid background
  • Bold, clearly defined shapes
  • Smooth, crisp edges
  • High contrast
  • Limited shading and texture
  • No mockup, shirt, person, or product in the image
  • No drop shadows or glowing effects unless intentionally requested
  • A centered composition
  • Space around the outside of the design
  • Print-ready, high-resolution artwork
  • design the art for screen printing

AI programs are often unreliable when generating words, names, dates, or slogans. For the cleanest results, generate the graphic without text and add the lettering afterward in a design program.

Sample Prompts for Print-Ready Artwork

Basic T-Shirt Design Prompt

“Create a bold, print-ready T-shirt graphic of a roaring tiger. Use clean outlines, solid colors, high contrast, and minimal shading. Center the design with clear space around the edges. Vintage Distressed Design Prompt

Add light distressing that is large enough to print clearly. Center the artwork on a transparent background. Do not include a shirt mockup, realistic background, tiny details, or text.”

Mascot or Logo-Style Prompt

“Create a clean mascot-style illustration of a bulldog wearing a welding helmet. Use thick outlines, bold solid colors, smooth edges, and a simple symmetrical composition. Make the design suitable for DTF printing and screen printing. Isolate the artwork on a transparent background. No text, gradients, shadows, mockups, or background objects.”

Sticker-Style Prompt

Before Sending AI Artwork to Print

AI artwork should still be reviewed before printing. Check for distorted objects, extra fingers, uneven lines, misspelled words, unwanted background elements, and small details that may disappear when printed.  AI often make up their own fonts so matching fonts to add text later can be a pain and expensive.

Whenever possible, submit artwork as a vector file or a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background. Raster artwork should be at least 300 DPI at the final print size. Simply increasing the resolution of a small or blurry image will not restore missing detail.

A strong prompt gives you a better starting point, but final cleanup and proper file preparation are what turn an AI-generated image into professional-quality print artwork.
